The rice farm which is situated on campus is of improved variety of Brown rice (Faro 44) was planted towards the end of December, 2016 and harvested sometimes ago. The special advantage of the breed is that harvesting could be done at least two times in a season. “The stems of the harvested rice are fruiting again, that will be harvested in December this year or early next year”, said the Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Prof F. A. S Dairo.

He expressed joy over the result achieved with the Lowland Rice pilot project and proposed an expansion for subsequent planting to increase harvest.
This Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele commended the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences for making the best use of available land and assured the Faculty of the Management’s support in actualizing the “EKSU Rice” dream through the provision of land and equipment.
Professor Bandele expressed the belief that production of rice would be on a large scale soon and promised that some of the equipment needed for processing the product could be produced in the University.
The EKSU rice will have an edge on all other rice in the immediate vicinity as planting and milling of EKSU Rice is done under strict hygienic condition and free of stone, dirt and shaft husks.
This is a major feat for a Tertiary Institution, what do you think? Leave your comment and share this post with others.
