UNIABUJA Unions stage Protest Over 2009 Agreements

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association Union of Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technology (NAAT) of the University of Abuja yesterday protested the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement reached with the Federal Government.

The non-academic workers unions of universities across the country are currently on strike, over welfare of members, provision of academic materials among other demands.

The chairman of JAC, Israel Orokpo said the protest was to draw attention of the University management and the Federal Government to the need to provide facilities for teaching and learning in the institution.
He said “Since 1999, government entered into agreement with the three unions of NASU, SSANU and NAAT till now government has not fulfilled its part. In the system which we work, we don’t have the materials to work with; you go to the laboratories, the field. And we recently discover an underground play that government sent a huge amount to a particular union but decided to send a little amount to other three unions. This is why we are withdrawing our services,” Orokpo said.
