'Be Prepared To Employ Yourself'- VC tells 4500 New Students

The University of Abuja (UniAbuja)  matriculated about 4,500 new students into its various academic programmes for the 2017/2018 academic session.

Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Michael Adikwu, urged the students to prepare for self-employment on graduation as employment opportunities in the public sector are getting slimmer by the day.

According to a statement made available to The AUTHORITY by UniAbuja’s
Deputy Registrar in charge of Information and Publications, Mr. Waziri Garba, the VC challenged the students to keep their eyes on what they intend to do on their own when they graduate and work vigorously towards achieving that target.

The country, he said, was passing through some challenges especially in the area of youth unemployment which should inform the students to be creative from their first day in the University.

The VC also charged the new intakes to explore areas in their chosen areas of studies and apply their creativity to them with a view to eventually creating jobs that will not only serve their immediate needs but be able to cater for others.

While calling on the students to always avail themselves of the counseling services of the institution in the quest to attain high academic standards and moral rectitude, Adikwu observed that the nation’s education system was facing serious challenges which all stakeholders needed to address in the best ways they could.

“While the University’s authorities here will constantly make effort to ameliorate as much as possible problems that might inhibit learning, you the students on your part must avoid any distractions that could render such effort futile,” the VC added.
