The Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has demanded the review of Corricula in Nigerian Universities to accommodate sporting activities.
A director of Sports, University of Benin, Dr. (Mrs.) Felicia Igbase made this known at the end of a return leg match between the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and University of Benin in the ongoing Higher Institutions football league (Hifl) at UNIBEN Sports Complex on Wednesday.
She solicited the support of the national Universities Commission (NUC) and the Federal Ministry of Sports and Ministry of Education in projecting the ideal to help discover young sports talent.
According to her, “Our academic programme is pulling ‘s back. I am appealing to the Ministry of sports to give us every Wednesday which is supposed to be a half free day for sporting activities”.
Addressing newsmen, Prof. Obinna Chukwu, Director of quality assurance in office of the Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG), said the tournament encourages healthy rivalry among tertiary Institutions.
He described the 1 – 0 victory by UNIBEN over their visitor, UNILAG team as keenly contested as interesting, adding that “what is important is participation”.
Vice-Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Faraday Orumwense who performed the symbolic kick in the match at UNIBEN Sports Complex, described the victory as a product of hardwork.
Orumwense who was represented by Prof. Jacob Ehiorobo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), assured that the University will win more laurels in both national and international competitions.
Commenting on the exercise, the director of Sports University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Joseph Awoyinfa, said: “though we were beaten, but we were not disgraced.
He said the competition helps to titillate young minds which is a breeding ground for sports development
Our Correspondent reports that Imade Osarenkhoe, jessy no 9 holder scored the only goal after 17 minutes of first half in the match which put UNIBEN ahead of UNILAG on 2-1 aggregate.
UNIBEN in their earlier appearance had secured a 1-1 drew their away match with UNILAG.
Efforts by the UNILAG team which demonstrated resilience to alter the tally in the second half of the march was resisted in the attack and defensive line by the UNIBEN team.
With the current arrangements, UNIBEN has progressed into the finals of Coaster A Category where six terms are expected to compete for honours.
A leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Dennis Idahosa, was among the sports enthusiasts that watched the match.
