As a University Student the most important thing is your CGPA, as it is like your life on campus, before I tell you how to calculate your CGPA it's important to know what it means.
What is CGPA?
CGPA is the short form of Cumulative Grade Point Average which is the summation of TCP (Total Credit Points) for all semesters to date, divided by the summation of TLU (Total Load Unit) for the said semesters.
CGPA Scale in Nigerian Universities
Performance in semester examinations and assessments for courses/subjects/modules are classified into letter Grades (from A, B, C, D, E, to F) which represent a range of score or marks a student can obtain. A particular grade point is assigned to these grades, see below.
Marks/Score | Letter Grade | Grade Point (GP) |
70% and Above | A | 5.00 |
60 – 69 | B | 4.00 |
50 – 59 | C | 3.00 |
45 – 49 | D | 2.00 |
40 – 44 | E | 1.00 |
0 – 39 | F | 0.00 |
Calculating Your Grade Point Average (GPA)
Grade Point Average (GPA) is derived by dividing the Total Credit Point (TCP) for the semester by the Total Load Unit (TLU) for that semester.
Eg. Consider a student has 45 Total Credit Points and his/her Total Load Unit is 15, his/her GPA is 45/15= 3.00
Every course has its own Credit Unit (CU), credit points are derived from multiplying the Credit Units (CU) for a course by the Grade Point (GP) earned by the student in that course.
Eg. If in a 3 Credit Unit course, a student scores 64/100 which is B, the grade point for B is 4, then the Credit points that the student obtained for that course is 3x4= 12
For further explanation I have provided this example of how to calculate GPA and CGPA
First Year, First Semester
Course Code | Credit Unit (CU) | Letter Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP |
GST 101 | 2 | B | 4 | 8 |
BIO 101 | 4 | C | 3 | 12 |
CHM 101 | 4 | A | 5 | 20 |
CSC 101 | 4 | B | 4 | 16 |
MTH 103 | 3 | A | 5 | 15 |
PHY 107 | 2 | D | 2 | 4 |
Total | 19 |
| 75 |
CP = 75, LU = 19, TCP = 75, TCU = 79
GPA = CP/LU = 75/19 = 3.94
CGPA = TCP/TLU = 75/19 = 3.94
First Year, Second Semester
Course Code | Credit Unit (CU) | Letter Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP |
MTH 106 | 5 | E | 1 | 5 |
BIO 102 | 4 | D | 2 | 8 |
PHY 108 | 5 | B | 4 | 20 |
CSC 109 | 3 | F | 0 | 0 |
CHM 110 | 3 | A | 5 | 15 |
Total | 20 |
| 48 |
CP = 48, LU = 20, TCP = 66 + 48 = 114, TCLLU = 17 + 20 = 37
GPA = CP/LU = 48/20 = 2.40
CGPA = TQCP/TLU = 114/37 = 3.08
Note: This same procedure you follow calculate your CGPA throughout your stay in any University in Nigeria.
