MAPOLY Lecturers Reject Retired Principal As Rector

The crisis affecting Moshood Abiola Polytechnic deepens as lecturers reject the appointment of a retired school principal, Mr Ayodeji Tella as the acting Rector on Thursday, November 9.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic in MAPOLY kicked against Tella's appointment on the ground that he is a retired principal and he lacked the experience in teaching at the tertiary level.
The state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun had appointed Tella as acting Rector in November after sacking the former Rector, Prof. Oludele Itiola on Tuesday, October 3.

Itiola was said to have been relieved of his job as a result of the crisis that followed the conversion of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic to a University of Science and Technology and the establishment of a new Ogun State Polytechnic in Ipokia.
According to PM News, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Malam Usman Dutse complained about infractions in the appointment of Polytechnic Rectors in the country.
He said despite the 30 chief lecturers and 57 PhD holders in MAPOLY, the government went ahead to Mr. Ayodeji Salimon Tella who according to him does not have the academic and professional standing of the acting rector.
He said, “despite the fact that the institution can boast of about 30 chief lecturers with 57 PhD holders, intelligence report alleged that a retired school principal with little or no experience in teaching at the tertiary level, research and community service was appointed as acting rector.

“Till date, the polytechnic community does not have any information regarding the academic and professional standing of the acting rector, Mr Ayodeji Salimon Tella. These grievous anomalies are yet to be redressed, even with the assurances from relevant government agencies,”

An anonymous lecturer who was reluctant to talk to Pulse about the crisis said only the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic can speak on the issue adding that he does not want to give his individual opinion on the matter.
For months, MAPOLY has been going through a crisis as the government and lecturers differ on the upgrade of the school to a University.
This coupled with the failure of the state government to fulfil agreement has prompted the lecturers to embark on an indefinite strike.
